Generic medicines, together with other cheap off-patent medicines, are key to a better access to healthcare. Fostering a sustainable climate for these medicines is vital to the efficiency of the pharmaceutical market. Across Europe, the COVID-19 pandemic has been a wake-up call to address the challenges from the security of supply of medicines, and of off-patent medicines in particular. In this context, the European Union has set up a ‘structured dialogue’ and is preparing ‘a pharmaceutical strategy for Europe’ that aims at ensuring better access to medicines and resilient medicine supply chains. At a Belgian level, the Federal Government’s manifesto advocates an increased use of cheap medicines. In the midst of negotiations for a new pharmaceutical pact in Belgium, the challenge is on to create a sustainable climate for generic medicines and to safeguard access to cheap medicines.
